And the award for Sustained Excellence in Performance goes to…

Hawaiian Baritone Quinn Kelsey recently was awarded one of the 2018 Freddie Awards for ‘Sustained Excellence in Performance’ by New York Public Radio’s Fred Plotkin.

Mr. Plotkin, one of America’s leading experts on opera, watched 91 performances of opera at 27 different companies in 2018. Here’s what Mr. Plotkin had to say about Quinn:

Baritone QUINN KELSEY excelled in five different roles at the Met — starting with Peter in Hansel and Gretel, in which he deployed perfect diction in English, and four roles in Italian: Conte Di Luna (Il Trovatore), Enrico (Lucia di Lammermoor), Amonasro (Aïda) and Giorgio Germont (La Traviata) — as well as a noble Rodrigo in Don Carlo at the Washington National Opera. All of these performances were rich in detail both musically and dramatically. Kelsey, like Tito Gobbi and certain other legendary baritones, knows when to sacrifice beauty of tone for theatrical purposes, but also is able to produce gorgeous sound when that is the most important thing.”
