Opera Express – Tours to Schools

Each year, Hawai’i Opera Theatre produces a 45-minute mini-opera specifically designed to take “on tour” to schools all around the state. In addition to being a great experience with live music and drama, this show can also be used to enhance curriculum. Themes are relevant to social studies, language arts, math and more. We send a study guide ahead of time that includes a synopsis of the show and classroom activities.

This production is recommended for grade level K-8 and family audiences. All of our operas include opportunities for students to interact as characters in the play, as well as offstage chorus members. Shows can be performed in the cafeteria, auditorium, or any large space. Our set is modest and we also provide the piano for live music accompaniment.

Cost per performance is $325 with the recommended audience size of 200 students per performance. Shows can be scheduled back-to-back within the same day to accommodate more students!

THE TOURING PRODUCTION FOR THE 23/24 SCHOOL YEAR IS THE CURSE OF LOU LING.

An unknown prince has traveled to the kingdom of Lou Ling to win the hand of the princess, but to win her hand, he must answer three riddles. Winning makes him a king…lose, and he’s lost everything. Don’t miss this opera which features some of Pucciniʻs most thrilling music.

TOURING DATES: October 23 – November 3, 2023, February 20 – March 1, 2024

TURN YOUR SCHOOL, GRADE LEVEL OR PARTICIPATING CLASSROOMS INTO AN OPERA PRODUCTION COMPANY!

The Opera Residency program has become an annual learning program for the schools and its success shows.

Participants have the opportunity to experience a backstage tour and a professional grand opera at the Neal Blaisdell Concert Hall, plus your school gets a visit from HOT Opera Express, HOT’s Education staff, and more.

The program is a great interactive tool for integrating arts into your curriculum through the art of opera. In addition to its foundation in literature, opera offers multiple opportunities for tie-ins to math and other core subjects. The program can be a great complement to Core Curriculum goals.

If you would like your school to be considered for the program, please call 596-7372 or e-mail education@hawaiiopera.org.

Orvis Young Voices

DESIGNED FOR SINGERS IN HIGH SCHOOL, HOT PROVIDES TEENAGERS IN HAWAI’I THE OPPORTUNITY TO EXPLORE THE WORLD OF VOICE PERFORMANCE THROUGH WORKSHOPS AND MASTER CLASSES WITH GUEST CLINICIANS.

In 2014, HOT’s Education & Outreach created the Orvis Young Voices Studio for singers in grades 9 through 12.

Our mission is to provide young singers in Hawaiʻi with the unique opportunity to explore the world of solo voice performance.

With group workshops, one-on-one opportunities, performing and watching performances, singers grow as artists, make contacts, and improve themselves as performers. Workshops will cover topics such as diction, acting, interpretation, performance practice, use of the voice, college auditions, and more. We hope that those auditioning will have a voice teacher, but having a voice teacher is not a requirement to become a member of the Studio.

The Orvis Young Voices program is supported by the Arthur and Mae Orvis Foundation

Cost of the Program: Free

Audition Requirements:
Please present one to three classical pieces. Art songs, musical theatre, spirituals, sacred music, and folk songs are acceptable. Audition form available at HOTyoungvoices.weebly.com
