Celebrate HYOC’s 55th Season with La’ieikawai: Princess of Paliuli

Hawaii Youth Opera Chorus celebrates its 55th Season with La’ieikawai: Princess of Paliuli!

If you enjoy the Big Band music of the 1940’s, you are sure to love this production, which is set on the Big Island during that era telling the legend of La’ieikawai.  La’ieikawai: Princess of Paliuli will be performed by the talented students of Hawaii Youth Opera Chorus (grades K -12) under the direction of Nola A. Nahulu and will be sung in English and Hawaiian.

This also marks the 20th Anniversary of the composition by Dr. Neil McKay, who was commissioned by HYOC to compose the opera and create the libretto.

Two performances of the production will be held on November 11, 2015, at 3:00pm and 6:00pm at the Hawaii Theatre.  Tickets ($18 – Students, Seniors, & Military and $23 – Adults) can be purchased at the Hawaii Theatre Box Office. To buy your tickets call 808-528-0506 or visit HawaiiTheatre.com.

OPERAtunities with HYOC

Screen shot 2014-02-14 at 11.13.30 AMThe Hawai‘i Youth Opera Chorus is holding open auditions for OPERAtunities, a high -level summer theatre program, for boys and girls grades 4-12. Unique among theatre programs, OPERAtunities give students an appreciation of Hawaii’s history, culture and music through the production of a youth opera.

During this three week intensive workshop, participants perform with a live orchestra, develop proper vocal techniques and dramatic acting skills, and learn about costuming, stage make-up, and prop construction.

Eligibility

  • Students who are entering grades 4-12 during the Fall 2014 semester are eligible for this program.

Tuition

  • Tuition is $600.00 which includes all workshops, rehearsals, performances, costuming and makeup.

  • June 9 – June 28, 2014, June 27 and 28, 2014 / Monday – Friday 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm / University of Manoa, Music Department / Show times and location TBA
