HOT Benefit Opportunity – Angus Art Collection Sale

Through numerous donations to the Washington Place Foundation, a superb charcoal drawing of Ka`iulani by Madge Tennent has been added to their collection which will be on display at Washington Place.  With the recent opening of the displays on the second floor depicting the personal lives of those who lived at Washington Place, this charcoal drawing of Ka`iulani, Lili`uokalani’s favorite niece and heir apparent, will be seen in the Dominis Parlor.   

This drawing became available through the Donald H. Angus Art Collection that will be for sale at the Hawaii Opera Plaza, 3rd Floor, located at 848 S. Beretania Street.  The sale begins on Friday, April 13th from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 pm and will include a reception.  If you are interested in attending the reception on Friday evening, please call Hawaii Opera Theatre at (808) 596-7372 to reserve space.  The sale will continue on Saturday, April 14th from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm at the Hawaii Opera Plaza.  This part of his collection includes numerous charcoal drawings of Madge Tennent.  Donald was a dear friend, important patron, huge supporter and fierce champion of Madge Tennent and her beautiful art. 

A portion of the proceeds will be given to Hawaii Opera Theatre, Friends of Honolulu Botanical Gardens, Daughters of Hawaii, Washington Place Foundation and the Kona Historical Society. 

Donald H. Angus was born in Kewalo, Hawaii in 1908.  He continuously contributed to those around him as he became a Botanist, Historian, Art Collector, Plant Collector, Pacific Voyages Expert, Bon Vivant, Humorist, Raconteur, World Traveler and Philanthropist. 

Educated at Punahou, McKinley High School, Menlo College and the University of California 
at Los Angeles, Donald moved to London in 1930 where he was an antique dealer and was member of a fascinating group of artists, writers, socialites, landed gentry and idiosyncratic 
characters. During World War II, Donald volunteered to help bomb victims in London.  

After World War II, Donald moved to Tangiers, Morocco for twenty years where he further indulged his interest in botany and art. Donald moved back to Hawaii in 1972, where he 
died in 2001. 

Donald was a major contributor to museums, libraries and botanical gardens his entire life. Making significant gifts to the American Legation Museum in Tangiers; the Byzantine Collections of the Boston Public Library, the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts, the Bishop Museum, the Honolulu Academy of Art, the Honolulu Botanical Gardens, the University of Hawaii Hamilton Library, and others, Donald left an important legacy for us all.
