(Set Design mock-up by Designer Michelle Bisbee)
The set for “Elixir” is currently being built in HOT’s Waipahu scene shop, the first production in over 15 years both designed and built locally. HOT’s talented design team recently toured Hawai’i Plantation Villages for inspiration and historical background.
“We wanted to create an authentic, Hawai‘i-centered set, specifically here on O‘ahu. It was decided early on that this would be a sugar cane farm, so we started our research on what the environment would look like. Green fields, red dirt, blue skies, the valley between the Wai‘anae and Ko‘olau mountains, and traditional plantation-style homes – this led us to our preliminary research at Hawai‘i’s Plantation Village,” said HOT Scenic Designer Michelle Bisbee.
The design team is working with other production members on the project to honor Hawai’i’s culture and to recreate this classic story on the island of O’ahu. Come February, you can step into the Blaisdell and be transported to the emerald-green mountains, which tower behind dim streetlamps, an old farm truck, and a charming country store in this loveable opera. Audition window for the 2022/2023 program is still open!
This program is open to high school singers living in the state of Hawai’i. Those selected will have the opportunity to work with professionals in opera and the performing arts to hone their skills as performers. Participants will perform and learn from HOT staff and guest artists and each other in masterclass format, learn about professional opera performances, and participate in workshops for acting, diction, and interpretation. Classes are led by Hawai’i Opera Theatre staff, and guest artists and clinicians locally and from the mainland.
THE SECRET GARDEN The season opens in October with a gorgeous operatic telling of one of literature’s most beloved children’s stories, The Secret Garden, by composer Nolan Gasser and librettist Carey Harrison. Directed by H-O-T’s very own Karen Tiller, the cast is headed up by soprano Laura Corina Sanders in her HOT debut and rising local talent, tenor Taka Komagata. The production will be conducted by Elizabeth Askren, who is making a name for herself throughout the US and Europe. This production, perfect for the whole family, is the same traditional story you love but set in a tropical Hawaiian oasis. |
ELIXIR OF LOVE
In February, love is in the air with Donizetti’s charming comedy, Elixir of Love, sung in a witty English translation. The fantastic ensemble cast includes soprano Natalie Image, tenor Andrew Stenson, and baritone Efrain Solis with director Maria Todaro, all making their HOT debuts. Benjamin Makino returns to conduct following the recent, triumphant run of Madame Butterfly. This heartwarming comedy hits the stage just in time for Valentine’s Day when a poor peasant falls in love with a beautiful landowner. H-O-T’s production is perfectly set-in present-day Hawai’i in a quaint town outside a rum distillery. |
GIANNI SCHICCHI
The final offering for the mainstage season is Puccini’s only comic opera, Gianni Schicchi. This one-act romp stars a world-class cast including local favorites Blythe Kelsey, Leslie Goldman, and Robert Feng, baritone Joshua Jeremiah in the title role with soprano Toni Marie Palmertree and tenor Brian Vu, led by conductor Mark Morash and director Gregory Keller. This hilarious one-act farce is filled with ridiculous plans, hijinks, and trickery. It is the perfect opera for first-timers, and even though it’s brief, it’s delightfully entertaining. |
