A MESSAGE FROM HOT REGARDING THE COVID-19 VIRUS

Hawai‘i Opera Theatre is aware that the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak is evolving rapidly, and we are closely monitoring news from local, state and federal agencies to inform our response regarding the potential impact to our community.

As of this writing, we are planning to continue with performances of Strauss’ Salome at the Neil S. Blaisdell Concert Hall on April 24 and 26, 2020. If the situation changes and the decision is made to cancel performances, all ticket-holders will be contacted by the HOT box office.

Please note the following message from the Blaisdell Center:

On top of our usual procedures to provide a safe and sanitary venue we are taking further steps to maintain and monitor building cleanliness and to communicate the message of prevention to our employees and guests. Signs, hand sanitizing stations and enhanced cleaning products for restrooms and food areas are part of the action plan. We are optimistic about the future and will work with you, our event organizers, in the decision-making process affecting your events.

As of today, Blaisdell remains open and operational and, with the recommendation of our local government agencies, there have been limited scheduling changes to our events. The health and safety of our clients, guests, visitors and employees continues to be our top priority. As a precaution, we ask our employees and guests to stay home if they exhibit symptoms or feel sick and will ask guests who display symptoms to consider not attending the event and be refunded. As the World Health Organization Director states: “We are all responsible for reducing our own risk of infection, and if we’re infected, for reducing our risk of infecting others”.

Additional notes from the Center for Disease Control regarding COVID-19:

There is currently no vaccine to prevent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus. However, as a reminder, CDC always recommends everyday preventive actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory diseases, including:

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing. If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty.
  • Follow CDC’s recommendations for using a facemask.
    • CDC does not recommend that people who are well wear a facemask to protect themselves from respiratory diseases, including COVID-19.
    • Facemasks should be used by people who show symptoms of COVID-19 to help prevent the spread of the disease to others. The use of facemasks is also crucial for health workers and people who are taking care of someone in close settings (at home or in a health care facility).
