An open meeting for past, present and prospective members of the Wagner Soceity of Hawaii (WSHI) will be held Friday, September 26, 2008, at 7:30 pm in the Card Room at Kahala Nui, 4389 Malia Street. The purpose of this meeting is to discuss the future course of the Wagner Society organization and its continued development.
The existence of the WSHI is in itself a tribute to the devotion and hard work of its founders, Larry and Kiyomi Lueck.  Their efforts and the partnership with Hawaii Opera Theatre resulted in international interest in HOT’s 2000 production of Tristan and Isolde, as well as a special relationship with Wolfgang and Gudrun Wagner and the Bayreuth Festival.  There is continued interest in the mission of the society, especially in view of HOT’s 50th anniversary production of Die Walküere in 2010.
A proposed agenda for the meeting includes election of officers, membership dues as well as scope and content of programs (frequency, speakers, subject matter).  Jim Becker and Henry Akina have drafted tentative programs for 2008/2009 which could include evenings devoted to Jim’s report on This Season at Bayreuth in its historical context (November), Ivan Törzs who will be in Honolulu to conduct Manon Lescaut on conducting Wagner (January), tenor Gary Lehmann, who will be in Honolulu to sing Don José in Carmen, on singing Wagner at the Met on short notice (March), and Henry Akina on staging Die Walküere (May).
Interest in continuing memberships in the International Wagner Society and the
Friends of the Bayreuth Festival will be discussed.  These memberships facilitate the possibility for Wagner Society of Hawaii members to obtain tickets for the festival.
All who have interest in the work of this major opera composer are welcome to attend.  Bring ideas to help make future WSHI events lively, informative and fun!  Please e-mail comments to mmis@hawaii.rr.com, or write to THE WAGNER SOCIETY OF HAWAII, P.O. Box 22297, Honolulu, HI  96823.
