Auditions for Hawaii Opera Theatre Mae Z. Orvis Opera Studio
Hawaii Opera Theatre holds auditions for the Mae Z. Orvis Opera Studio in late February/early March of each year in Honolulu. The Studio is aimed at singers living in Hawaii. It does not provide a stipend or any steady work but does offer free access to a variety of coaches and other opera professionals from around the world. Studio members frequently perform in the HOT's education and outreach activities, sing with the chorus and sometimes as comprimario in our grand opera season. The Studio has has brought in individuals such as: Richard Pearlman and Tim Shaindlin of the Chicago Lyric Opera, Mark Morash of the San Francisco Opera, Coach Accompanist Mary Dibbern of the Paris Opera, soprano Jill Gardner, baritone Jake Gardner, and soprano Helen Donath. There have also been masterclasses with Marilyn Horne, Denyce Graves, Jerry Hadley, Renée Fleming, Thomas Hampson, and others. Auditions for the 2010-2011 Mae Z. Orvis Opera Studio will be held from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Saturday, February, 27, 2009 in the Neal S. Blaisdell Concert Hall located at the corner of King Street and Ward Avenue. Interested singers should come with clean copies of their music in a three-ring binder, prepared to sing three arias in a variety of styles and languages. In addition to music for the accompanist, those auditioning are asked to provide HOT with a bio, a headshot (not necessarily a professional photo) and a repertoire list of arias, art songs, musical theater songs, and roles studied. These materials should be brought to the audition and need not be submitted beforehand. Hawaii Opera Theatre will provide a pianist, although those auditioning may bring their own accompanist. Entrance to the auditions will be through the stage door at the back of the Concert Hall.
