Turn your school, grade level or participating classrooms into an Opera Production Company! This year, Aina Haina Elementary School in Honolulu hosted a HOT Residency and will present its adaptation of Aida in May. The Opera Residency program has become an annual learning program for the school and its success shows. The large crowd has grown beyond the cafetorium capacity so the school erects a giant outdoor screen for an "Opera in the Dark" experience.
With the help of HOT Education staff, the school children will perform a family-friendly opera version of this classic production. Show times for the performances are in the evening, but space is limited and tickets are required. For more information, call Erik Haines at 596-7372 ext. 207.
The HOT Residency program is available for elementary, middle and high schools. Our opera education team leads your students and teachers through the process of producing and performing an opera.
Participants have the opportunity to experience a backstage tour and a professional grand opera at the Neal Blaisdell Concert Hall, plus your school gets a visit from HOT Opera Express, our wig and makeup master, HOT's education staff, and more.
The program is a great interactive tool for integrating arts into your curriculum through the art of opera. In addition to its foundation in literature, opera offers multiple opportunities for tie-ins to math and other core subjects. The program can be a great complement to No Child Left Behind (NCLB) goals.
Participating schools have included Palolo, Pearl City Highlands, Sunset Beach, Waimalu (2), Aina Haina (2), Ala Wai, Mae Mae, Molokai Complex Schools, as well as a joint effort between Manana Elementary and Pearl City High School.
Residency schools have included Aina Haina, Ala Wai, Momilani and Liholiho Elementary.
The Tateuchi Foundation supported Niu Valley Middle School's summer residency program, which featured a production of Gilbert & Sullivan's The Mikado. Funding from the Foundation enabled HOT to expand our program offerings to include several cultural workshops and a field trip focusing on Japanese culture, which added relevancy to the work the students did in the classroom and onstage.
If you would like your school to be considered for the program, please call Erik at 596-7372 extension 207 for more information or e-mail him at e_haines@hawaiiopera.org.
